I met a guy at the CAFE auto engine symposium a year or so ago.
He was a retired engineer at Chevy R&D working on transmissions.
He was the guy that designed the Chaparral's so-called auto
transmission back in the 60's. He had a Suburu powered airplane 
he was designing and building a hi-vo PSRU for. I'll have 
to dig up his phone number or email address.
He was in the bay area of CA as I recall.

One way of checking the chain is know the diameter of the pulleys
and the peak torque you can then calculate the shear loads on the
pins holding the chain together from the calculated chain tension.

Info I need:
Pulley diameter.
Pin diameter. 
Number of plates across the chain.
