Don't let all this talk discourge you. We are basicly trying
to minimise the drag so we can go 250 MPH. If you are flying
low and slow with a rag wing don't worry about it. Plenty
of room in the aft fuselage for a big rad just like the guys
with the V6 STOL. I would put the intakes on the sides however
as far forward and as high as I could... to take advantage
of the high pressure under the wing. No problems letting the air
come out under the stab.
BTW Tracy has a quick and dirty solution. He sprays cold water on
the rad when he is balked at taking off. Get his book and decide.

Paul is right, once the fundamentals are understood, cooling the rotary is
no big deal. My cooling problems were solved by simply shaping the inlet
ducts appropriately. I never changed from the junkyard A/C evaporator cores
and one Mazda oil cooler that I started with. The only factor left is the
ground cooling that Paul mentioned. This is only a problem if the day is
hot (92 or higher) and the takeoff delay is more than 15 minutes (like at
Oskosh). Then I use the "water spray" cooling system. One quart of water
is good for about an hour of taxi time. Some of the WWII fighter jocks
tell me that the P-51 was fitted with a similar system in hotter climates,
and for the same reason.
BTW, that cooling system chart that Neil sent looked odd to me. I thought
outlet area was always supposed to be larger than the inlet. Mine is. Have
I got it all wrong?

It looked odd to me too Tracy. Perhaps the curves are interchanged.
Also the areas look a little too generous.
