BTW   Thanks to all for the muffler advice.   I always listen to advice (don't always
follow :-)  ).   Looks like the "Swedish muffler" is way to go packed with stainless
pads.
One report says a horn is needed taxiing because they are so quiet.   It does meet the
"kiss"
engineering criteria  (mainly because I already have the materials except for hi-temp
glass roving but the stainless pads sound better and are readily available.)   The
tangential muffler
requires more construction skills.

Is this for a rotary or an air cooled aircraft engine? If it is for
rotary
almost nothing would be easier to weld up. Two down tubes into an empty 
six inch diameter hollow can and one three inch exit tube. 
No steel wool. What is so hard about that?

If you don't mind paying a weight penalty .060 stainless would 
only weigh 6 pounds... less the weight of the exhaust flanges. 

On the other hand a tangential type would be impratical for a horz
opposed aircraft engine.
