David, I got my louvers from a gent up in NY state, who does it more or
less as a hobby for the Hot Rod type. His e mail and web page are listed

Louvers by Canfield

Very reasonable, he made me four sets, he only has two width dyes a 5"
and a smaller 3" charged my $50 and turned out he had to end up
annealing and then re tempering (heating) as I wanted them made out of
6061. The unannealed metal wanted to tear at the corner of the louver,
so he made it soft, stamped the louver holes and then re tempered the
metal. There is probably no reason that you could not send him the
6061-0 to beging with.
The louvers are simply stamped into the metal. The long dimension on
mine is the 5" and each slot is approx 1/2" wide with approx 3/8"
between slots (back of one to the front of the next one). I personally
think that fewer louver with a wide slot would work better.
Just a guess, but I would estimate the air exits through the louvers at
an approx 45-60 degree angle. My ducts bring the airflow perpendicular
to the side of the cowling where the louvers are. I have one approx 14"
strip of louvers on each side with an additional 6" strip where I have
some of the oil coolers hot air exit on the right side.
Most people who have seen it commented that it looks fine (sort of
P51ish).
The louvers came in a 14" x 7" strip with the louvers spaced along the
14" inches. I shortened it a bit when installing on the cowl. I cut
out a opening that let the louvers stick through and riveted the outside
flange of the louver strip to the cowling.
There are a number of photos of my project at the following web page
(Paul has a link to it on his web page)

that shows the louvers on the cowling much better than I could describe
them. The horizonal louvers are on the lower half of the cowl. I also
have a set on the bottom right side near the firewall for exit of the
oil cooler hot air.
I toyed with the idea of putting louvers only on the top of the cowl to
let out the hot air under the cowl, but decided that I did not want to
provide a path for oil mist to spray across the wind screen.
Again, if I could have specified the louver sizes I would have opted for
louvers with a wider opening > 1/2 inches. The 3/8" between all those
louvers (I believe I have about 13 louvers in the cutout of the cowl)
means I have almost as much metal blocking flow as I do openings.
The louvers direct the outflowing air back at approx 30 degrees would be
my estimate.
I must admit that I did stick a bar in each louver openings and
carefulling streched the metal to get a little more width and more
importantly that lip to catch the airflow. It seemed to help which
again inferrs that perhaps fewer, but wider louvers might be better.
Hope this helps, take a look at the photos
