Noticed that it used alternating current.  We'd have to have a little
inverter on board to convert our 12 VDC.

No No you dont' need a converter. You use what is called a full wave
bridge circuit to drive the pump. I will make skematic drawing if you 
are serious about buying a pump and testing it.
