OK, I admit that I have never jetted a rotary before, but if I were to
use a carb instead of Tracy's EFI I would be using an EGT along with
plug readings - lots of plug readings! I've been thru this several
times with motorcycles just using plug readings - it takes a lot of
patience and again - LOTS of plug readings. Note that you should jet
'wide open throttle' first, then the idle circuit, and lastly the
needle/needle jet for the midrange. Is this how the rest of you guys
do this - note that these are diaphram / slide carbs, not downdraft or
sidedraft? Sure would be nice to have Pauls 'ping detector' to keep
from letting a lean mixture sneak up on you. On a piston engine you
have to start rich and work toward lean due to the danger of
detonation and holing a piston. Shouldn't matter with a rotary though
unless the load is so heavy that a apex seal might be broken thru
detonation. Paul, isn't breaking an apex seal due to ping unlikely
with a normally aspirated engine?
