I may have the opportunity to pick up relatively cheap a partially
completed Polliwagen fuselage and wings. The builder is in his 70's, and
is afraid of the plane. He has an IO360 which he was going to put in it,
but is keeping the engine.
So, my questions are:
[1] Do you have info on, or know sources for info on Polliwagens in
general (especially safety and handling)?
[2] Do you have any opinion on the suitability of putting a rotary on this
plane?
[One of the guys at the EAA chapter the builder belongs to claims
the Rotary will be too heavy.]
Thanks in advance. Al.

It won't be any heavier than an IO-360.
Total installed 13B weight according to Tracy is about 320 pounds as
I recall. Some of that is rads and water which can be placed in the
aft fuselage to help weight and balance.

The Polliwagen is really quite a small airplane -
I can't imagine anyone putting a 360 in it. Joe
Alverez (sp) designed it around the converted VW
class engines. It is rather short coupled, and
I don't think they ever got the bugs out of the
retract system. I met Joe at the Tehachipi glider
meet last year and he is a bitter but unbroken man
after being drawn and quartered by the lawyers as
a result of the fatal crash of the prototype
(they stripped him cleaner than a desert cow skull
even tho the crash was not design related). It is
not a bad design - but would be a challenging
project at this time. Vance
