Paul, the aluminum drain fitting is now steel, and the clear plastic hose is now
fuel line. I used a std Torrington thrust bearing to restrain the engine
thrust of the bevel input (sun) shaft. I also supplied lube oil directly to this
hi-spd, high load gear, rather than use the original splash system. You also
must properly restrain the flow going to the old and new oiling system, plus
make several other modifications.
The machinist who did this entire job will do these same mods for about $400. I
know Ross has recently installed a similar thrust bearing in Dave Atkins PSRU.
I've been taxing testing and run the engine for a couple hours since these mods.
When I pulled it apart a few days ago, it looked fine. I believe the idle
"clicking" is caused by the input shaft bumping into the back of the ring gear
when the engine misses, or has a power reversal, due the the side thrust of
bevel gear. I don't have any clicking with this arrangement.
I don't know that these mods will make the unit "live" any longer, but I do know
that it will eliminate the thrust load on the engine thrust bearing, and improve
the oiling to the planetary gear set. I know of a couple people who have
destroyed their 13B engines because of failure of the internal thrust bearing.
I'll try to make a drawing and send it to you.
