A more likely scenerio is that he became spacially disorentated (night, over
water, small moon, few shore lights, haze-- need I go on) and flew the
aircraft at cruise power into a dive ( of which he and the passengers were
probably unaware) which was stopped by the water.

Sounds like nobody trained him to scan the instruments if this happened.
There are lots of clues... wind noise among them. That one of the 
reasons I am not so sure about head sets.
