I chose my 87-88 engine for two reasons. First was price. They are much
cheaper than the new ones. Second was *low* compression. I'm planning to
run pump gas and no active knock sensor. The higher compression engines
make a little more power and better BSFC at the expense of less detonation
margin. I wouldn't feel as comfortable with a high compression engine that
is designed to run with knock feedback if I didn't have the knock sensors
in the loop.

BTW, I can make all the power I need with a low compression
engine I am planning to intercool anyway and if I have to make higher MAP
(due to lower compression) I am willing to reject a little more heat from
the intercooler in order to totally avoid knock worries. The heat due to
compression is similar but in the case of more turbo compression you still
have a chance to remove the heat.

Any guesses on the size of the intercooler required Jeff?

I'm looking at starting with stock and see what I get. The real question
is how much intercooler air flow is required and at what pressure? I'm
assuming the losses will be acceptable on the hot side and it's just a
matter of how hard I have to push on hte cold side to get the desired
effect. I have no idea what that number is yet.
