Ball bearing turbos do have considerably improved efficiency over plain
bearing ones.  The difference is about 3% overall.  The problem with ball
bearings is the weight of the balls spinning around so fast wears out the
outer races.  Really!!! That's why ceramic balls are so important to
turbos...less ball weight and stronger to boot.
