Super charger are driven off the e-shaft.
Turbo charger are driven with mostly waste energy in the exhaust.
Slight penalty from back pressure however.

better MTBF than the turbo?

I would guess probably yes.

The extra fuel burn doesn't sound like too bad a tradeoff given the high
heat problems of the turbo... or am I way off? ( I don't know much about
this stuff)

Well if money for gas and range are not important go for the super.
