The thing is actually a battery with two electrodes and the exh
gas as the electrolyte.  The variation in O2 content in the
electrolyte causes a variation in the voltage output of the
battery (sensor).  They are very accurate, but as you state
are killed by lead.  This is one of the main reasons why
we dumped the lead in gas, with catalytic converters
(of course) being the other biggie.
