Wiggins.  A wiggins attachment is basically O-ring glands welded to the end
of metallic tubes.  A sleeve is slipped over both and the whole thing is
held together with an outer clamp.  They provide substantial axial,
rotational, and angular float (no parallel).  The only elastomer used is
the o-ring seals.  They are probably too expensive for homebuilders though.
 You can make your own real easy if you just substitute the outer clamp
with a split ring and a metallic zip tie.

As I recall they have replaced AN-16 in most high buck race cars.
