Yeoooww! A 1/2 flange is *major* overkill and heavy.  1/4" should be fine in
general for any intake manifold, but I must confess I'm not familiar with this
part of the motor.  3/8" is belt-and-suspenders, and should be unecessary, AND
I don't see why 3/16" shouldn't work on most of these, unless very large with
no places for enough.

I am going with thin aluminum tube 0.049 bonded together with high temp
epoxy. That stuff is too hard to weld unless you find an artist.

I built up a specialized maintenace scaffold (fancy ladder) as a special project
for the local art museum and made it out of 2" 0.049" 6061-T6.  My local welder
had no trouble whatsoever.  I took all the pieces over to his house and we
put them together in an hour or so.  Beautiful work.  He is a local pro welder
that has been pres of EAA Chapt 200 for a few yrs, and now works on the
stablemate for the Legend (Jeff Ackland).   My guess is that most real pro
welders can do it fine, but avoid a "jack of all trades" type.  Perhaps I have
just been lucky, as he has done all my alum welding over the last 20 yrs and
is cheap and quick, he may have spoiled me.
