There have been a fairly wide variety of reported installed weights.
Alan
said 30 pounds lighter than a Lyc, Tracy and Jim Mosur claim roughly the
same weight as a Lyc, and Ed Anderson appears to be considerably
heavier. I
wouldnt say your wrong but make sure your comparing apples to apples.
The
Powersport engine in Alan's RV3 was peripheral ported with a 2 runner
aluminum tube intake. So the intake was very light. Everett Hatch could
never be coaxed into sacrificing power for sound level so Alan's RV had
no
muffler. The Powersport setup had rads and oil coolers near the firewall
rather than in cowl cheeks as Tracy, Ed A., etc.. so the heavy stuff is
kept aft.
Alan also admitted to me that the airplane was actually quite nose
heavy.
The mount and cowl was designed for the all aluminum Superlight engine
that
they built. They didnt change it when they installed the iron engine.
When I started sketching configurations for my RV4 I also decided
immediately to make my own cowl and eliminate the cheeks. This is more
for
aesthetics than for any perceived drag reduction. My prop flange will
also
be about 5" forward from stock. I used Tracy's installed weights from
his
book and re-calculated the cg. If my engine weighs what his does with
all
accessories it looks like my batteries will have to go in the baggage
compartment to stay behind the forward limit solo with full tanks. I'm
planning to stuff both the radiator and oil cooler under the cowl
located
back toward the firewall.
The RV-4 with a wood prop tends to be tail heavy. Lots of Lyc drivers
go
to a CS prop just to add weight to the nose. The RV-6 doesnt have that
same
tendancy. If your going to push the prop flange out on a -6 better be
careful to keep that engine light.
