Good question. Why do the revisionist call it PS and not HP?
I guess it is the same reason that they  now call
cycles-per-second "hertz".

I think it is the new international term for HP as
God knows the revisionist can't honor those bad old

PS has been the std euro (DIN) spec for horsepower for many
years (decades).  Not exactly the same as SAE hp specs, but as they
have modified the temp/alt (etc) corrections to the SAE spec in the last
decade or two, SAE hp is getting pretty close to PS hp.  IIRC, PS is about
5% lower than the equiv SAE number, so the 280 PS for the
new Mazda is prob more like 290 SAE hp.

For most purposes they are close enough to be interchangable,
today, altho 30 yrs ago the difference was greater due to some
fairly unrealistic corrections used by SAE, so
the old SAE hp numbers were "legal" but actually a bit inflated.

I'll bet Paul Yaw can quote us chapter and verse on the DIN vs SAE
HP specs and the temperature and altitude corrections used now and
in yesteryear.

I do not know what "PS" literally stands for, however.
