I first started scanning photos/drawings recently.  Tell him to set his
scanner software  on 100 pixels per inch resolution for the scan.  This
dramatically reduces the size of the files.  I initially thried to preserve
resolution by scanning at 800 ppi and of course got gigantic files.  Since
the screen has a resolution of approx. 72 ppi scanning at 100 ppi does not
diminish the image.  Also, he may have a prescan function that you can set
the boarders on the scan area and eliminate a lot of white space.
