I'm just curious if there are any other automotive direct-drive
conversions that have proven successful. Volkswagon is the only
one I can think of. Do the bearings need to be changed in a VW
engine, or any other mods made to make it work?

The Corvair is out there, also running direct.(approx 100hp).
My first VW aircraft also had an additional bearing support on
the front end. Grob motorgliders, using the same basic engine,
(80hp) also add an additional front bearing support.
