Uh, I must have a misunderstanding of what "direct drive" means.  I thought it meant
that there was no gear or pulley coupling between the engine crankshaft and the
propeller hub.  Could you explain how using the Mazda transmission (with its gears)
would be a "direct drive" ?  If, instead, you mean "no RPM change" coupling, then
that I can understand, although it seems pretty inefficient to lug the transmission
around if you're going to run 1:1 all the time...

Most manual transmission when in high gear the input shaft and output
shaft are locked together. You could replace the guts with a solid
shaft and do away with all gears making the whole thing a lot
lighter.
