There is that then there is the fact that a turbo weighs 20 to 30
pounds. Why use something like that when you can use the forward
speed of the airplane to pump as much air through the rad as it
can use at cruising speed. You just need to design the rad and diffuser
properly. In the case of the FW 190 the aircooled BMW engine was so
souped up thay could not get enough fins on the engine for
the amount of air available from the forward speed of the
airplane so they used a geared fan.
An electric fan or tank of dribble water for ground cooling
would weigh far less than a turbo not to mention it would
cost way less too.
If you are going to put a turbine on the exhaust it would be better
to gear it down and connect it to the e-shaft for more HP with the
same fuel burned. In other words a turbo compound.
