Paul,

I have been receiving your news letter for a week now and can contribute to
that fire article/letter. I am an avionics tech and electrician and have
been for many years. In all of the 20 or so years of servicing aircraft only
once have I been the repair person for an alternator failure. The alternator
regulator blew and let the full AC voltage blow every electrolytic capacitor
in all equipment that wasn't protected with "close value" fast acting fuses.
Very expensive proposition and scared the pilot half to death. All aircraft,
vehicules and other equipment using a charging system should have two
things; 1-a battery selector/control switch as used in marine multi battery
configurations. and 2-all battery positive lines should have inline fuses
close to the batteries as an added fire prevention safe-guard.
For what it's worth, the bailing out of a craft at altitude is even more
expensive.
