BTW in 20 years of flying I have had only one problem with a V belt driven
alternator
and that was because the FAA certified mechanic that did the annual left the
belt
loose. A visual inspection is all that is required with V belts. If they are
in good
shape and the tension is right they almost never break or slip.

My concern is not with the belt itself but what happens if the driven
accessory seizes. It is practically impossible to insure that an air pump
for instance won't loose a bearing or munch a vane.
