Titanium has been tried but I think the thermal characteristics
were found to be less than Ideal.
I think a steel aluminum composite
design similar to the rotor housing might work. Better heat conduction
out near the apex seal slots might help cool the apex seal springs
better.
A two piece design 3D milled out of steel and laser welded
together on center line might also work.

I guess I did not understand the question :-)
Did you mean? Has anybody tried to lighten the stock current cast iron
rotors by one pound? The answer to that is; I don't know but I think it probably
has been tried. Mazda offers light weight racing rotors but
I think they are only about a half pound lighter than stock. As I recall
I think Mazdatrix quoted me $1200 each.
