Jeff is right about the history of rotary engines being one of tried and
failed material pairs. Do a search for an SAE paper from the 1960's by
Curtiss Wright (I believe Galliers and Lamping may have been the authors). It
has literally dozens (if not hundreds) of material pairs listed with test rig
and in-engine results.
