Of course, slightly leaky valves that just created a pressure differential

You mean slip. If you bank in a coordinated manner the gravity
vector is perpendicular to the bottom of the fuselage
Good point. That would preclude putting the valve outboard.
If the valves were inboard slipping would not hurt as the down
wing valve would uncover. The balls should be weighted so they
just float with clearance around them so they don't stick.
