Subject: Noise from ducted fan stators & eff.

My question for Jeff is "what are the noise effects of stators behind
the prop?"  I'm installing my old duct1 stators now in duct2, have never
flown with stators yet.  Of course these have to be on radials, but I'm
not sure what distance to place them behind the prop either.  I'm making
the whole 7-blade assembly removable so I can relocate it.

My son and I were going to experiment with it for model a/c jets.  He lost

I guess what you mean by "traditional impeller designs." is a ducted
fan without stators. I am sure P&W, GE and RR have tried all 
configurations. I am also sure Jetfan is not implying a 20-25% increase
over the typical airliner ducted fan. In the case of a turbo compound
waste heat energy is being recovered. In the case of a ducted fan there
is no waste heat energy (yes I know. it is all heat. don't write) but 
there could be waste energy in the vortex emanating from behind a 
ducted fan or prop for that matter. To recover this would not be free. 
There is the aero drag from the stator. It could however show improved 
thrust and I wait with bated breath to find out how much when Perry 
modifies his duct with stators and flies it.
