I have done the same 'water inject tune up' alluded to by others and
toyed with the idea of water injecting a Pontiac 350 back in the mid
'70s. I also read somewhere that B-29s launching off Iwo Jima for Japan
used water injection to get off the short runway with heavy loads. Those
airplanes had engine changes every 5 or 6 missions (I have no clear
recollection of the stated reason for the short engine life). I always
figured that anything that would blow as much s**t out of an engine as we
got with our little water inject stunt (only at real high idle - we had
no practical way to inject it at high power) had to be hard on an engine
at high power over a prolonged period.
Just a theory .... Jim S.
