It is interesting about the cracked tubing that you found re idle. I
learned about this recurring problem after I put the car on jack
stands and at one point it was something I intended to check out,
but I had forgotten about it by now. I'm sure I saved an e-mail on it
at one time, but you know what? There is a good chance if I had
put it back together I would not have remembered. One of the
problems of delaying on working on something.

The "gunk" in the water pump is interesting too, because both of
my TIIs (I had another one that I traded on the Explorer some years
back) started running considerably hotter at a certain point in time.

The first was a 50,000 miles or so and the second (the one you
have) at 75,000 miles. Here is a clue for you which may or may
not be pure coincidence. The problem coincided with the "major
tuneup" in routine service. Because of the result on the first one, I
put the major tune up for a while on the second one. I wonder if it
is the result of something they use in flushing the radiator? I
always used distilled water and coolant, myself and I would bring
my own distilled water because I don't trust dealers.

Now, I'm curious about my convertible. My engines have run with
the hot-cold gauge fairly close to "cold" until the problem develops,
and then run at about 1/2 gauge. Even though I just had the water
pump replaced, I wonder if there is gunk in the housing and they
just failed to notice it?

That is hard to miss.
