Just a note about these adhesives;
 9330 is an aerospace quality epoxy paste without the glass beads so it has
 lower viscosity than my favorite, 9330.3. They both have temperature
 capabilities to 300F.
 9430 is a commercial epoxy, such as might be used for cars, which does not
 have temp capabilities much above 160F. If you are going to use adhesive
 where it may get hot, I'd go with the better grade 9330.3.

Hello Bob, Thanks for your input.  I tend to agree with the preference for
9330 over 9430.  But let me quote you some numbers from some Dexter brochures
/ data sheets that I have here from both companies.

9330 and 9330.3 "service temperatures" are given as 180 deg F with no
strength figures given at that temperature.
9330 and 9330.3 tensile lap shear at 200 deg F are given as 750 psi
9330 and 9330.3 tensile lap shear at 77 deg F are given as 5,000 and 4,900
psi respectively.

9430 tensile lap shear at 180 deg F is given as 750 psi.
9430 tensile lap shear at 140 deg F is given as 1,400 psi.
9430 tensile lap shear at 77 deg F is given as 4,700 psi (etched aluminum)
9430 tensile lap shear at 77 deg F is given as 1,400 psi (fiber reinforced
plastic substrate failed at that loading).

I don't have any strength figures for 9330 or 9330.3 at 300 deg F but the
above numbers will give some relative feel for the performance of 9330,
9330.3, and 9430.
Also there is no way of knowing exactly how the above test numbers were
obtained so direct comparisons are not necessarily valid.

A problem is that 9330 seems to be much harder to come by and I was quoted
prices for 9330 that seemed a bit higher than warranted.  For example in Aug
1998 a distributor in Georgia quoted me a quart kit cost of $104.75 for 9330
and $113.25 for 9330.3 plus a $20.00 shipping cost.  At that time quart kits
of 9430 were being sold by Wicks and Aircraft Spruce for around $40.00.  If I
remember right Wicks would also special order some 9330 for shipment direct
to me from a distrubutor out west at a cost of approximately $70.00 per quart
kit plus a $12.00 hazard shipment fee, plus the cost of shipping.

So you can see that when I looked at the relative performance of 9330 and
9330.3 versus 9430 why I went with more 9430 for my KIS TR-1.

There also seems to be some batch date issue related to 9330 that I never
could quite understand.

If I decided to go the 9330 or 9330.3 route I think that I would prefer to
mix 9330 with cotton flocking to get the consistency that I wanted rather
than have glass beads (hollow glass spheres?) throughout the adhesive joint.
"Micro" (laminating epoxy mixed with hollow glass spheres) is generally
considered to have little structural capability so I don't know why Dexter
Aerospace would choose that material to obtain the thixotropic qualities of
9330.3.  There are other materials available, probably all heavier than
hollow glass spheres.

Hello Fellow KIS Builders,  When I started to build my TR-1 wing last July I
knew very little about Hysol.  Now that I have finished the portion of wing
building that used Hysol I have learned a little bit and I would like to
share some of what I learned with you.  My remarks are aimed at the builder
who has not yet started to use Hysol for building his wing in the hope that
he will benefit from what I have learned.

I'll write this in two parts to keep the lengths down.  The first part will
deal with the two Hysol adhesives that I used, EA 9330 and EA 9430.  The
second part will deal with how I used them.  I have no connection with either
Dexter company that manufactures the two Hysol adhesives.

EA9330:  This is the Hysol that I received with my kit from Tri-R.  It is a
two part epoxy adhesive manufactured by Dexter Corporation Adhesive & Coating
Systems located in Bay Point CA.  This Dexter company aims their products at
the aerospace industry and the tests that they use and the results that they
publish are also germane to that industry.  I'll list a few data points from
their brochure 4/98-7.5M. REMARKS: "Easy mix adhesive with high peel strength
and excellent environmental durability". APPLICATIONS: Structural Repair,
Composite Bonding. CHARACTERISTICS: Service Temperature: 180 deg F.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES:  Bell Peel @77 deg Fis 60 pli (I think this stands for
"pounds per lineal inch); Tensile Lap Shear @77 deg Fis 5000 psi; Tensile Lap
Shear @200 deg Fis 750 psi. BULK PROPERTIES: Tensile Strength @ 77 deg Fis
5600 psi. HANDLING: Mix Ratio Weight is 100A to 33B; Cure Time @77 deg F is
5-7 days; Cure Time @ 180 deg Fis 1 hour; Pot Life is 60 minutes for .25 lbs.

It can be purchased in convenient kits that yield one quart (two pounds, or
32 oz, or 907grams) of adhesive when mixed.

COST: The cost will vary with who you get it from.  I think Rich quoted me
around $70 for a one quart kit.  Wicks would also special order me some that
would be shipped direct from a distributor to me at about the same price.
There would be additional costs for shipping and for a hazardous shipment fee.

EA 9430: This Hysol is a two part epoxy adhesive manufactured by The Dexter
Corporation located in Seabrook NH.  They have a web site at
http://www.hysol.com. This Dexter company aims their products at the
automotive and industrial markets and the tests that they use and the results
that they publish are germane to those markets. One cannot necessarily make
direct performance comparisons just based on a couple of published tests
numbers because the testing methods may have been different.  I'll provide
some information from their brochure dated 2/98 and a data sheet marked 4/93
- 1M. REMARKS: "High strength, high peel epoxy. Has been used for over 20
years in the manufacture of bicycle frames and components such as front
suspensions.  Bonded joints exhibit superior tensile lap shear and peel
strength".  PEEL STRENGTH @77 deg F is 60 pli; TENSILE LAP SHEAR @ 77 deg F
on etched aluminum is 4700 psi; TENSILE LAP SHEAR @ 180 deg F on etched
aluminum is 750 psi; TENSILE LAP SHEAR @ 77 deg F on Fiber Reinforced Plastic
is 1400 psi (substrate failure); BULK PROPERTY TENSILE STRENGTH @ 77 deg F is
5300psi; MIX RATIO WEIGHT is 100A to 23B; Handling strength of 500 psi is
achieved in 6-8 hours at 75 deg F; Cure time at 75 deg F is 5 days. Cure time
at 180 deg F is one hour. Pot life for a 250 gram mass is 50 minutes.

It can be purchased in convenient kits that yield one quart (two pounds, or
32 oz, or 907grams) of adhesive when mixed.

COST:  Both Wicks and Aircraft Spruce (see page 54 of their 97-98 catalog)
carry Hysol EA 9430 as a stock item for approximately $34 for the two pound /
one quart kit.

Some of my observations / opinions are:  Heat obviously has a great affect on
the strength of these epoxies (no surprise there).  Within their useful /
intended strength / temperature range they are both probably strong enough
that the substrate would fail before the epoxy would.

I'll try to put Hysol Part Two together within a few days.

**PS:  There is also a Hysol EA 9330.3 which is a thixotropic (non slumping,
sorta acts like mayonnaise) version of EA 9330.  It appears to cost about $10
more per quart kit than  the regular EA 9330. I haven't tried it.  Only
benefit seems to be that it could stay where you spread it well enough so
that you wouldn't have to mix in any cotton flocking to thicken it up to keep
it from running out of the joints before curing like you do with EA 9330.

 Both EA 9330 and EA 9430 are referred to as "self leveling adhesives".  Just
pour some out on a flat surface and it tends to spread out.
