On my two 12a gyros I've built, I had the exhaust behind me, and even had
multiple mufflers, and STILL had to have ANR headsets just to sit close
enough to fly the beast!!!

Simple stright and to the point. I really like it a lot.
IMHO the side outlet for the exhaust is the cool setup :-)

I think you mean Mike Gary and not Al. Mike has mufflers of a sort. You are out in 
the open sitting on your gyro. Mike is in an enclosed cockpit. Alan Tolle 
used to fly coast to coast with a 200 HP rotary with two 36 inch long pipes and no 
mufflers at all. 

In WW II pilots sat in fighter airplanes with up to 3000 HP and side
exhaust with no mufflers at all. Another difference is speed. You fly 0-80
MPH and airplanes go 60 to 200 MPH. We shall see
