I would bite the economic bullet and use Mobil 1. Way better than regular oil
in resisting break down at high temp. You can get get it in Walmart by the
case for less than $4.50/qt I think.

Interesting on that dark black. How is your compression?
Was that the cheap  $0.99 oil? Did you lap those end housings?

I haven't checked compression the last couple of years and don't remember the numbers
before that. Yes, that was the cheap oil. No, I didn't lap the end housings.

BTW, I had to run the starter for more than 2 minutes before I got oil pressure
showing! I guess next time I should try filling the oil filter before mounting it.

Another point. After my no-oil pressure bearing failure, I decided to add ProLong. Is
there now a better additive out there? I really like the idea of being able to limp
home without the bearings sizing after oil loss.
