Dave Barninger (who has been quoted a lot lately) had a comment on
this during his "engine session" at MADS.  I believe it went something
like this:

To decarbonize an engine:

1.  Remove a small vacuum hose and replace it with one long enough to
    reach into a container of ATF.

2.  Start engine, and allow the vacuum at idle to suck ATF into the
    engine until it stalls.  Replace original vacuum hose.

3. Leave it there over night.

4.  Call fire department and tell them to disreagard what will look like
    a fire at the location of the car when you start it in the morning.

5.  Restart the car and hope the neighbors don't panic when they see the
    smoke.

IIRC, he did not specify whether the engine should be warmed up and
shut down before installing the vacuum hose, but it would probably be a
good idea.   He mentioned this would be a good thing to do to the
engine at regular intervals.  The figure of 20 to 30 thousand miles
comes to mind, but I don't recall.
