Listers,
ADVISORY CIRCULAR 43.13-1B Acceptable Methods, Techniques & Practices - Aircraft Inspection and Repair is the bible of acceptable methods of repair for certified aircraft. This is a MUST HAVE publication for every homebuilder. The -1A & -2A versions mentioned in the post above were released in 1989 and are obsolete.
Even though our aircraft are not "certified" in the normal, utility or aerobatic categories, these are excellent guidelines for assembling an aircraft. AC 43.13-1B came out in November of 1998. It was the first update of this publication in 10 years. Previous editions did not address repair of composite structures. This publication has extensive listings with drawings, which will help you identify all sorts of aircraft grade hardware. It outlines how to make proper repairs in metal, rag and tube, composite and wood aircraft structures. It also outlines proper welding technique and many, many more things. It is truly a great source of information.
AC43.13-1B may be downloaded at the site below,
http://www.moneypit.net/~pratt/ac43/
It is published in Adobe Acrobat format (PDF) You will need Acrobat reader to view these files. AC43.13-1B is over 400 pages long (I know, I downloaded it and printed it out the first week it was released). Because of it's size, it is broken up into over a dozen sub sections. This will allow easier downloading.
If you don't have Adobe Acrobat on your computer, you can download the program installation file at
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
AC43.13-1B is also downloadable from the FAA's web site. However, good luck trying to find it. You'll spend a lot of time locating it. The government is sooo good at red tape!!
RV builder Ed Cole offered AC 43.13-1B plus 5 other FAA publications useful to the homebuilder for sale on a CD for $10 last year. I purchased one of these CDs from him. It's money well spent. I do not know if he is still making these. You can contact him at emcole@ix.netcom.com
