Nobody claimed that the fuel returned to the tanks was evenly split, just like nobody
claims that the fuel drawn from the tanks is evenly split.

In the hypothetical "both" setting, fuel would be disproportionately drawn from the
supply fuel line with the higher pressure and returned to the return fuel line with
the lower pressure.  The pressure in the lines is a function of the ambient pressure
in the fuel tank and the height of the tank.
