Just to confuse it a bit more, the dictionary I have right here on my 'port'
side (The Reader's Digest Great Encyclopedic Dictionary! <G>) states the the
term 'port' was started during the days when wind was the main source of
power and commands were called out vocally.

It was changed to prevent confusion.  Prior to using the term 'port', right
was 'starboard', and the left was 'larboard'.
