I just read an article on the Reno Races in Machine Design.  They

state that

the only limitation in the Unlimiteds is that it has to be a piston

engine.

Is this in fact true?  I was kind of looking forward to "Le Mans-ing"

Reno Races (as a group of rotary enthusiasts,of course)

This could be true. Perhaps in the Sportman's class the rule wording
may be different. Such as; "no turbines or turbo jets".
Next October at the Shady Bend flyin in Florida we are organizing our

own

race for rotary powered airplanes. We will allow piston engines
to compete.

I am sure that if you asked them to allow a Wankel they would say OK
however, if you say rotary, they woud suspect you were trying to
get a turbine "sleeper" into the race. - Vance

Based on previous Wankel experience is racing, you will get one chance.
Enter the unlimeted class, do well and they will change the rules to ban
you. Think about it, that class is a little club of guys who have spent $$$
over the last 20+ years doing exactly what they think is fun. They will
surely protect that investment.  I doubt the sport class would be different.
Look how much Lancair and Continental (or was it Lyc) have pumped into that
class.

I think Mark is absolutely right. History bears him out. When the rotary starts
dominating (and it will... with a high ratio PSRU or turbo) the rest will panic
and attempt to outlaw it.
