Good call Bill -I had to know you guys would ferret it out -  This was an engine that
I thought
for sure that some one should build if it had not been done. The "square" is the
obvious next step from the delta (deltic)  four cranks with a pair of pistons on each
side of the square - 24 cylinders, 48 pistons
65 liters basically four of the classic Jumo inline sixes wrapped up in a box. Easier
to "phase" than
than the delta, which requires one crank at reverse rotation and forces a 20 degree
phase.The reference
that I found said that it had possibly been test flown, Development stopped in favor
of the jets, and
some hint that the design might have been picked up by the Russians. If you really
want Diesel,
this would be a great way to go - a 2 row would give you 8 overlaping power pulses per
turn
like a V-16 four stroke (or a four rotor Wankel) - Vance
