Lower weld, I meant. I'm no expert, just took a class at the local community
college, at $180 it was a bargain. Lots of time on the welder, the instructor
was a fount of  knowledge and experience. Luckily, we just got a Miller
syncrowave welder at work, so my motor mount fabrication should be that much
easier to get done. I'm using the Barry mounts found in the Mcmaster Carr
catalog, but I have a question. What exact bolts are recommended for the
motor mounts. Is  there a specific type specified? Thanks

Well normally certified aircraft and kit airplanes use AN bolts.
I am using four 1/4 internal wrenching bolts per composite firewall
joint I bought at McMaster Carr. The big 1/2 bolts holding the 
22002 rubber bushings are so over designed anything you find in
the hardware store are fine.

 Back in the old days (1960's) I calculated the
load on bolts and tried to design in the right size. I came up with a
#10 screw to hold a 600 cubic inch big block Chevy in a race car
chassis. Would work fine too except the mechanics torqued them off
as they normally did not bother with a torque wrench. "Better tighten the heck
out of that tiny bolt Newt. After all, it is holding the entire engine in." :-)
Colin Chapman of Lotus race car fame had about the same experience.
Consequently race cars are now designed with oversized bolts that
"look about right" to race car mechanics :-)

On the other hand I am sure Van Gruen has calculated all the loads
on the bolts used in the RV series so use what ever he says to use and
torque them to what ever he says to torque them to.
