Yes, it is a 90A alternator with an internal regulator.  Would you

replacing it with a different alternator?  If so, what alternator /

is being used by most builders out there?

Yes if you want to be strictly safe in this regard. Any alternator without
a built in regulator should work. They come in all sizes. I suspect something
out of a Honda would be good. As far as what everybody else is using...???
