Hi Paul.  
I got my 13-B now, and am building a plane for it.  I'd like to do something
stupid, but for a good reason.  I want to get rid of that heavy
flywheel/gear ring and put the starter motor at the front end.  I recall
someone some talk of this on your BBS.  Who was that?  Is there any
resonance problems with removing the flywheel on the 13-B? (I am going
direct drive)

That should work. You will need the auto transmission rotor balance
weight on the flywheel end of the engine. 

It was done long ago by Duncan at least once.
He was attempting to sell a configuration like that but some people sent
him money and he did not deliver. It won't be an easy thing
to do.

It also won't buy you much as the auto transmission flex plate/ring gear does
not weigh very much and is not much larger, if any, than the rear housing.
