Didn't the Air force try to develope some sort of rotary powered airplane
during the Vietnam conflict? I seem to recall that they tried (sucessfully)
to put a rotary engine onto  some sort of glider to use for reconnaissance.

Yes, on a pylon with a huge prop to be superquiet for recon.  Several built.
I'll lookup the details if anybody cares.
