Your friend had something else wrong with that engine!
Poor cooling of the rear engine of a skymaster is also another "urban"
myth. If the rear engine baffling and rigging was maintained correctly
there was seldom a problem cooling the rear engine-they even deleted the
fan from the 68 model cause it wasn't necessary when the scoop was
optimised. Look at all the latest info on the skymaster and you will see
this myth is a common misunderstanding. Kind of like the one where all
Cardinals were death traps of bad design (from a la 60 min show one time).
Nothing could be further from the "truth".

I can tell you after 4 Skymasters, they are great airplanes that fly like a big
182 and cooling problems are a myth. As long as the baffling, rear cowl flaps and
other systems are properly maintained,  just like any other aircraft.
