Chuck please tell us how you moved the starter over to the
side of the engine
on Tracy's psru plate. I just noticed that. got a picture
from the other

I had to saw off part of the bottom of the plate to get clearance from my
radiator. The starter definitely would not fit down there. I then took a
piece of 1/2" 6061 plate cut to size, and attached it to the edge of Tracy's
plate with three 1/4" socket head bolts thru counterbored holes in the new
plate and tapped holes in Tracy's plate. Used a hole saw to cut the starter
nose hole and bored it out to final size. That cheap-o Harbor Freight
milling machine is coming in very handy! The top starter mount bolt came too
close to the existing plate-to-motor-mount spacer to allow a nut on the back
side, so I put a 3/8" Heli-coil in the plate. The starter I was using with
the Ross drive would have worked but it was still in the way of my oil
cooler duct so I used a different starter, out of the 1986 RX-7 automatic.
The mounting ears on the new starter are at an angle (130 degrees?) to each
other which allowed me to cut more off the added plate for duct clearance. I
had to make a 1/8" thick shim plate to keep the new starter gear from
slightly contacting the flywheel ring gear. I painted the drive housing and
Tracy's plate, and powder coated the added plate and the mounting spacers. I
am using a $90 Harbor Freight powder coat gun and a small toaster oven, the
main plate would not fit in the oven.
