Don,
I used a slightly longer bolt in the adapter plate mounting hole shown in
the attached picture. The tab that was added to the plate to pick up the
other mounting ear was part of the bottom of the adapter plate where the
starter was originally mounted and which I cut off for clearance for
radiator ducting. The tab was tig welded onto the plate but if thats a
problem for you I would imagine it could also be bolted on using some sort
of splice plate. No custom machine work required for this mod. Of course it
hasnt flown yet so the starter may fall off the first time I fly it. :-)

Mike,
Thanks for sharing your technique. I think I will try a similar approach. I
think I will "V-notch" both sides of the interface seam, have it Tig welded
in place, grind the weld bead on the starter mounting side flat, and finally
bolt a steel anchoring strap across the seam. I'll also place a safety cable
on the starter just in case. Then I'll just say a prayer before each
flight!!!
Don
Don,
If you have followed many of my posts, you'll appreciate that I am VERy
safety oriented. If you do the proper grind-back (V notch) and have a
competent welder weld the 1/2" plate, you have no need of the steel
plate. Mount the electrical cable to something structural with a tightly
fitted adel clamp close to the starter and you'll have your safety cable
at no extra weight.
