Paul,
This area must have been covered before and possibly
before I had a chance to understand it.

I Have seen installations where there is only two tubes to the manafold,
what it did from there I don't know - perhaps split into two to form the
manifold plate!?

After seeing this drawing, I wondering why the four tubes.
I initially thought that it kept the the air fuel mixture separate and
uniform,
however, keeping four separate tubes with the same size fuel injector and
two different
tube size,  would suggest the smaller tube has a richer mix.
Also why is the manifold plate end of the tube approx 18% smaller that the
tube.

It would seem simpler (to me) to have the two larger tubes splitting in two
at the manifold plate.

I guess your following the original design as close as possible, but i'm
wondering why it's like that when a simpler design with larger tubes (but
eliminating the18% reduction) would give more uniform results.
Would solve the problem of the oil dip stick as well. Perhaps reduce the
price of a mould and manufacture as well.

I may be well off the mark, but I would like to know why it is so !

I think the four tubes was originally so something called a dynamic chamber
could be used. In light of the fact that nobody has instrumented any of these
manifolds, with high speed pressure sensors, other than Mazda, we are just 
following Mazda's lead outlined in the several SAE papers that they have 
published. In other words we are not sure what we are doing. 
It seems safer however to use four tubes and four injectors to eliminate
any possible complicating  pressure wave reflections from the Y's.
