Question Tracy. Is the Chev GM coil per plug a simple pulse
transformer or is the saturation current type?
Paul Lamar
Only thing different about the GM coil (used on LS-1 engine) Is that it
is
magnetically biased so that it can store a large amount of energy in a
small, light weight package. It will saturate if dwell time is not
controlled and uses a transistor instead of a resistor to limit
saturation
current but the wasted power is the same.
Tracy Crook
Tracy, does your controller function as a peak and hold current controller;
that is, at the start of the pulse, more current is allowed to flow (peaks)
to ensure that the injector is turned on, then limited to a lower current,
just enough to hold on the injector - hence the term peak and hold.
Your instructions call for using a series resistor if one type of injector
is used and not for the other. National Semiconductor used to make and IC
that performed the peak and hold function for fuel injectors, don't know if
it is still available but if so, it might save some power for those
interested in that.
