Those were my first thoughts too. But then I would also ask, if a design
change can help reduce the likelihood of "poor maintenance" then why not do
that? Also, it seems to me that the failure mode is backwards (no power
instead of full power) and perhaps that IS a design defect? I don't know, I
just ask the question.

There was some thought given to that I think. If the arm does not break but
just the cable breaks I think there is a spring on there that gives full
power. I need to check that however to be sure. Checking mine means I need
to take the lower cowl off which is somewhat of a big production.
It would be easy to place the throttle shaft off center on the butterfly
so air flowing into the carb will cause the throttle to go wide
open with air pressure alone. There could be a patent in that :-)
