That Toshiba sounds great. Perfect. Let me know if you need a DOS QB program
for logging data in real time.  Never heard of a 16 pin USART. Smallest I have ever
seen was 24 pin. Why don't you use a 16 pin PIC with UART build in?

Sure. You can multiplex the the sensor data with a PIC and send it in serial
fashion to one RS232 or the parallel printer port if it is bi di. Some are.
This kind of limits the speed you can gather data.

The PIC? No. You will need some external hardware.

It is much easier and faster if you use a 386SX mother board and a data acquisition 
card as no multiplexing would be necessary. They usually have multiple parallel
ports.  256 ports are possible with the Intel architecture. The cards come in a wide 
variety of flavors for the old ISA bus.

I can send you the DOS QB compiler zipped. Absolutely the easiest programming
language ever developed bar none. Won't function completely in Windows
as Windows disallows a lot of the QB real time and direct hardware
access stuff.
