 It is just the back light. Most of the high brightness LCD's use small
florescent
 tubes for back lights. It is probably possible to build your own back

light.

I believe that touch screen in an airplane is a "non-starter". Get some
turbulence, and you could be giving commands that change your display to
areas you don't want.  When bouncing around, it is sometimes difficult to get
ahold of the knob on the radio while watching the instruments (under the
hood).

Hadn't thought of that, Bill.  Good point.  One could widen the focus
area as a possible fix.  Keyboard and mice seem even more problematic in
rough turbulence.  Any other ideas?  A large phone style keypad has been
suggested.
